Specialty Units

One of the benefits of working for the Fort Lauderdale Police Department is that we have all the career opportunities of a large city while still maintaining the family atmosphere of a smaller agency. After probation is completed (1 year after being sworn in), officers are eligible to apply for openings in over 20 different specialty units. With this large number of specialty units to choose from, you can reach your career goals even faster with the Fort Lauderdale Police Department.

While officers are eligible for specialty units after probation, many choose to continue working in patrol. Patrol officers are also eligible to participate in ancillary duties such as SWAT, Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD), Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT), Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD), Dive Team, Honor Guard, Quick Response Force (QRF), Bike Platoon and many more. Patrol officers can also be selected as Field Training Officers (FTO) and tasked with training new academy graduates as they begin their law enforcement careers!
