Local Non Certified Police Officer Applicants MUST complete the Physical Agility Test and Basic Abilities Test (if applicable) PRIOR to submitting an application and the results MUST be submitted with the On-Line application. For Non-Local applicants these tests must be completed prior to your Oral Board.

*As of July 1, 2022, section 943.17(1)(g) states that any candidate wishing to enter a law enforcement academy that either (i) is a veteran as classified in section 1.01(14), F.S., or (ii) holds an associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university is not required to take the Law Enforcement Basic Abilities Test. Please note that veteran is defined as being honorably discharged from military service. No other discharge classifications qualify. Please note that this does not apply to candidates wishing to enter a corrections academy.

All applicants must complete the Online Application. You must create a NeoGov account in order to complete an application. You MUST ensure that you also submit the Required documents with the Online Application.

This document MUST be completed in it's entirety. It is strongly recommended that you First Save the PJQ either on your hard drive or on another similar storage device then complete it. The reason for that is because sometimes after filling out the PJQ, people have told us, that when they go to upload the document or print the document, it is blank. NO blank spaces are accepted on the PJQ. Please enter N/A in all inapplicable fields.
Attention MAC Users: A Mac file or Mac-formatted disk cannot be read by a PC. As a result, please refrain from using the MAC application "Previewer" function when saving your Pre-Job Questionnaire (PJQ).
In order for your questionnaire to be reviewed by our agency, it must be saved in an appropriate format, such as Microsoft Word for Windows document (*.doc) or converted to a Microsoft Word for PDF file. PJQs submitted in any other format are not visible for application screening purposes and, unfortunately, will not be accepted. The PJQ will not be accepted in person or by fax or mail.

4) FDLE or POLICE OFFICER CERTIFICATION – Proof of FDLE Certification or a state Police Officer Certification with training curriculum from a home or state academy must be submitted with your on-line application. Out-of-state certified candidates must have one year of full-time, independent work experience in patrol (excluding any academy training hours and Field Training-FTO) in order to be considered for the 92-hour Exam Qualification. ***Please Note that it could take up to 30 days after the submission of your application to be notified by the Police Department. Please be patient and continuously check your Personal Email and your NeoGov account messages.
A driver history record MUST be provided for each state in which a license has been held, or documentation showing that you have formally made this request. The drivers license history is considered current if issued within 3 months of the current application.

Oral Board
Once your application has been approved, you will be notified by the City of Fort Lauderdale to schedule your Oral Board Interview. If you do not schedule your interview within the specified time frame, you will be considered withdrawn from the testing process. Please be sure you can commit to your scheduled interview date and time. A No-Show may result in an applicant being disqualified.
A three (3) member panel consisting of two (2) ranking officers from the Police Department and a Human Resources Representative will rate applicants in a formally structured interview. Applicants will be evaluated on characteristics important to the Police Officer position including, but not limited to, Command Presence, Integrity, Initiative/Interest, Communicative Ability, Tolerance for Stress, and Judgment/Decisiveness. Appropriate business attire is required.

Background Investigation
The focus of the background investigation will include, but is not limited to, verification of education and training, previous employment and work history, driving history, arrest and conviction record and past or present use of drugs. Discrepancies found in the background investigation from information provided at any point in the selection process may be grounds for disqualification from the Police Officer selection process. The background investigation will be administered after a conditional offer of employment is given.

Polygraph exam results are good for six (6) months (and then only upon the written recommendation of the Police Department). The polygraph examination will be administered after a conditional offer of employment is given.

The psychological exam cannot be repeated any sooner than one (1) year from the date of the removal from the eligible register (and then only upon recommendation of the psychologist).The psychological examination will be administered after a conditional offer of employment is given..

Prior to being hired, eligible candidates are required to successfully complete a medical examination by the City of Fort Lauderdale’s licensed physician. Candidates will be required to meet the City’s physical standards as determined by the licensed physician. A drug screen test is part of the medical examination
